Prescribed Burning at Lake Skinner
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), in cooperation with the Southwest Riverside County Multi-Species Reserve (SWRCMSR) will be conducting broadcast burning on 12 acres west of Crown Valley and De Portola Road (TB 900-H1) on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.
This prescribed burn is part of the Stephens Kangaroo Rat (SKR) habitat enhancement. SWRCMSR is conducting an experiment for biological information on the preferred habitat for the SKR. These burns will be an integral part of the information gathering process. In addition, the fuel-modified zone will better enable the fire department to keep fires that might start on the reserve from moving into the surrounding communities.
The burning operations utilize CAL FIRE fire engines and CAL FIRE Oak Glen Conservation Camp Fire Crews. The Lake Skinner Vegetation Management Program (VMP) is one of several planned prescribed burns in Riverside County communities area to mitigate hazards and educate the public in advance in the event of a major wildfire.
Burning operations will typically begin after 7:30 AM and will conclude by 3:00 PM each day of burning. The burning operations will only occur on permissive burn days as determined by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and CAL FIRE /Riverside County Fire Department. -###-
